PRP has been used in a variety of clinical scenarios. Now it has recently been used in aesthetics. A new and effective use of PRP has been the successful regrowth of thinning hair, especially in women. This condition known as female alopecia can now be treated with the use of your own activated platelets.
Platelets are commonly known to be one of the main blood components to help us clot normally. It has now been shown that when these platelets are activated with calcium gluconate, a remarkable occurrence happens. The platelets begin to release proteins called cytokines which contain several growth factors. Some of which are effective in re-growing dormant or thinning hair. The process is straightforward, a tube of blood is drawn from the arm just like in a normal physical exam. The tube is then spun in a centrifuge which separates out the platelets. These platelets are then mixed with a solution of calcium gluconate for activation and injected into the scalp with a tiny needle. The procedure is not time consuming and one can conceivably return to work that same day!
