Has your face begun to lose some of its glow? Are you looking for a solution that will even out your skin tone and leave you with a brighter, more radiant appearance? Chances are you’ve heard about dermaplaning, but did you know that this treatment can also be combined with chemical peels for even more powerful results? Dr. Park Avenue in Franklin Lakes, NJ offers both dermaplaning and chemical peels, and we can design a treatment plan for you that incorporates both treatments for results you will love.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment in which a small, sterile scalpel is used to gently shave the skin. This treatment, sometimes referred to as a scalpel facial, works by removing the dead cells sitting on the surface of the skin, allowing fresh new cells to surface.
A scalpel facial is a more aggressive form of exfoliation than shaving and waxing, and patients who have undergone this treatment enjoy brighter, rejuvenated skin that is more youthful in appearance. The treatment also unclogs the pores and gets rid of fine facial hair, leaving the skin smooth and soft. This treatment can only be performed on the face.
What’s the Treatment Like?
Any scalpel facial begins with a cleansing of your face and the application of a solution that will open up the pores. With the scalpel at a 45-degree angle, we’ll then make quick strokes across your face, holding parts of your skin taut as we work. You’ll feel a gentle sensation and may hear light whispering as the scalpel crosses your dry face, but this non-invasive treatment involves no pain or discomfort. Most patients find the treatment to be relaxing, and some even fall asleep during their sessions!
Most appointments last less than an hour, and you’ll be able to get right back to your regular schedule immediately after. Some patients even schedule this treatment during their lunch hour. Your skin may appear flushed right after your appointment, but this will quickly subside.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are another non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that can be used to address a broad spectrum of cosmetic issues, including wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and age spots. Chemical peels involve the application of an acidic solution, which is left on the face and allowed to dry.
After a chemical peel, patients may experience a few days of flaking skin, which will allow fresher, healthier-looking skin just beneath the surface to reveal itself. Different chemical peels have varying levels of intensity, and we can work with you to select the right one for your skin type.
Our practice offers alpha hydroxy acid peels. Alpha hydroxy acids are chemical compounds that stimulate the exfoliation process. They are also helpful in treating acne and reducing the appearance of scars and sun damage.
What’s the Treatment Like?
Like a scalpel facial, a chemical peel begins with a gentle cleansing of the face. The chemical peel solution will then be applied. This treatment doesn’t take long to perform, and it will spur the body to begin a natural renewal process. Your skin will feel a little tighter during the days immediately following your treatment, and you’ll want to treat it gently.
That will mean avoiding skincare products that have the potential to create irritation, such as retinols and strong exfoliants, and avoiding excessive sun exposure. It’s also a good idea to avoid rigorous activity for the rest of the day after your chemical peel.
Why Should I Consider Combining the Treatments?
The premise behind the two exfoliating treatments is the same. Both get rid of dead skin cells that tend to accumulate on the top of the skin, allowing the fresher, healthier skin that’s just beneath the surface to reveal itself. When used in combination, the treatments complement each other and deliver a deeper and more potent facial renewal.
The dermaplaning treatment takes place first and focuses on removing the very upper layer of the skin. Clearing away those outer skin cells allows the chemical peel to penetrate more deeply and work more effectively. Dermaplaning can be used in combination with a number of different types of peels. Because it opens up the pores, sloughs away dead cells, and deeply cleans the face, this treatment also works well with other services offered by our practice, including facials and microdermabrasion.
By opening up the skin, a scalpel facial allows those other treatments to penetrate deeply and be more effective. This treatment also bolsters the efficacy of acne medications and the serums and moisturizers you use at home. The days following a scalpel facial are a good time to double down on your at-home skincare routine.
Other Advantages of a Combined Treatment
The combination of both a scalpel facial and chemical peels offers a number of advantages. This treatment combo can give you brighter, younger-looking skin, smooth away fine lines, and clear up skin that’s prone to acne breakouts. Here are some of the advantages of combining these two treatments:
Both of these treatments are non-invasive and can be performed in a relatively short amount of time in our office. That means they’re great for busy professionals who can’t afford to take a lot of time off for a more involved, surgical procedure. These are also comfortable, relaxing treatments that many patients say they look forward to.
Less Chance of Acne Breakouts
If you struggle with occasional bouts of acne, this treatment can help clear up your skin and minimize the chance of future breakouts. Dead skin cells, oil, and dirt that has accumulated on your skin will be cleared away.
And because the scalpel facial will also get rid of the facial hair that traps and retains oils and dirt, it will be easier to keep your skin clean and clear. This treatment combination can also minimize the appearance of acne scars and tone down the redness that those scars sometimes have.
Fewer Fine Lines
These treatments promote the development of healthy new skin cells and collagen. That means your skin will look fresher and healthier, and the skin will be subtly plumped in a way that smooths over fine lines and wrinkles. That’s why both treatments are often incorporated into a patient’s long-term anti-aging regimen.
Complete Facial Rejuvenation
After undergoing these treatments you’ll notice a number of improvements in your skin. Your skin tone will be more even, and age spots and other signs of hyperpigmentation will be less noticeable. Your face will also be softer to the touch and you’ll generally look more relaxed, refreshed, and youthful.
Your Cosmetics Will Go on More Easily
Because the scalpel facial will have removed your facial hair, foundation will go on more easily and will look better. Have you ever noticed that when you’re wearing foundation, every hair on your face seems to stand up and out? Clearing away that peach fuzz will leave you with a face that is as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Cosmetics will go on smoothly and look terrific.
Because these treatments are non-invasive, they can be safely used on patients with all skin types and tones. Men, women, and adult patients of all ages have taken advantage of this powerful treatment combination.
How Often Should I Have These Treatments?
Because a scalpel facial does not permanently remove facial hair, many patients return for follow up sessions every four to six weeks. Allowing at least four weeks between appointments gives the skin time to completely go through the cell regeneration process.
With chemical peels, many patients experience superb results after just a single treatment, although follow up chemical peels can be scheduled as desired. We can design a treatment plan for you that will completely meet your cosmetic goals.
Is a Consultation Required?
Patients who are interested in these treatments are asked to schedule a consultation with Dr. Paul Fondacaro. Dr. Fondacaro graduated from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed a surgical residency and worked as an Attending Surgeon at Long Island College Hospital and as Assistant Director of Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He has performed cosmetic surgery exclusively since 2007.
Dr. Fondacaro will evaluate your medical history, talk with you about your cosmetic concerns and goals, and work with you to determine if this treatment combination is right for you.
Will My Facial Hair Grow in Thicker?
There’s a common misconception that your facial hair will grow in thicker and darker after you’ve shaved, and patients sometimes worry that that will happen after a scalpel facial. Fortunately, there is no truth to this myth. Neither of these treatments will influence the rate at which your hair grows.
How Long Will My Skin Peel?
Depending on the strength of the chemical peel, your skin may flake for anywhere from 3 to 5 days. During this period, gently cleansing and moisturizing your skin and applying sunscreen will be important. It’s also important during this time to avoid the temptation to pick at the flaking skin. Allow the skin to go through the peeling and healing process naturally on its own. Picking at the skin could result in irritation and scarring.
What if I Don’t Experience a Lot of Peeling?
Don’t worry if you don’t see a significant amount of peeling after a chemical peel. Everyone’s skin is different, and for some patients the flaking is minimal. The success of a chemical peel is best judged by the end results and not the amount of flaking that took place.
Are There Any Reasons Why These Treatments Might Not Be Suitable for Me?
If your skin is excessively sunburned or is inflamed in any other way, we may recommend postponing these treatments. These treatments are also not ideal for patients who have recently used an acne medication called Accutane. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not suitable candidates for a chemical peel. But dermaplaning, because it does not involve the use of chemicals, can be safely performed on patients who are pregnant.
Can These Treatments Be Done Anywhere Other Than the Face?
Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, or hands. Scalpel facials are generally only performed on the face.
