Where Can Laser Hair Removal Be Used?

Are you tired of the waste of time that is the daily shaving ritual? For most of us, shaving has to happen every week, and sometimes as often as every day. All of life must stop, at least temporarily, while we get rid of unwanted hair. Laser hair removal with the Nd: YAG laser at Dr. Park Avenue in Franklin Lakes, NJ can get you free of the stubble and razor burn, and it can be used almost anywhere on your body.

Where Can Laser Hair Removal Be Used?

Laser Hair Removal treatments can be used to target unwanted hair almost anywhere except on your eyelids. Our innovative laser can even target hard-to-reach areas. Treating your hair with laser removal is an exciting way to get smooth skin that really lasts.

When women think about unwanted hair, they typically think first about their legs. For men, it’s very common to want to remove excess hair from the chest or back. But there are also other popular areas to target, for both men and women. You might never have thought about some of these spots before: yet you could have perfectly smooth skin, even here!

Legs

We start with the obvious spot for women, but it’s not a bad idea to consider how convenient it would be if you did not have to take time out of your shower every day to shave your legs. Think about the time you could save and the aggravation you could avoid.

The average woman spends close to 80 days of her entire life shaving, and the majority of that is her legs. It’s a very time-consuming process. And have you ever cut yourself around the bones in your ankle? Have you ever been absolutely sure that you cleared out every hair, only to be frustrated by the sight of strays once you get out into the sun later in the day?

And this doesn’t even take into consideration the inconvenience of needing a place and the time to shave your legs. Have you ever had to reject a spur-of-the-moment invitation because you weren’t shaved and didn’t have a place where you could do it? If you remove these hairs with laser treatments, you’ll never have to worry about this inconvenience again.

Underarms

This is another area we don’t often think about most of the time, but it can make a big difference to your daily life to have clear skin here. How many times have you thrown on a sleeveless shirt only to realize that you had to run to the bathroom to do a quick shave?

Once you put on your favorite summer shirt, did you spend time wondering if the stubble was short enough to get away with, or even tell yourself that you’ll just have to remember not to raise your arms? Wear what you want without a second thought by treating the hair under your arms with the Nd: YAG laser at Dr. Park Avenue.

Face

For women, the face is one of the most popular areas to seek laser treatment. The laser is perfect for treating problem areas like the chin, sideburns, or the upper lip. Instead of wasting time carefully plucking the hairs one by one, you can get rid of them for months at a time with a laser treatment.

But women are not the only ones who need treatment on the face. Men also find it useful to use the laser on their faces, and it’s important to note that you don’t have to remove all the hair. You can use laser treatments simply as a way to reduce a very thick beard. With just one or two treatments, you can thin out your beard so that razor burn is not an issue.

Forearms

Few people think about their forearms unless they have a lot of hair there naturally, and if you are one of those people whose hair comes in thick and dark, you may have wondered if there was really anything you could do about it.

Laser treatments are the answer, and, as with the face, it’s not necessary to use a laser to remove every single hair. Instead, you can simply thin out your hair until it grows at a level you feel comfortable with.

Bikini and Brazilian

Most people turn to wax to treat these areas, yet these are some of the most painful areas to have waxed. It’s also possible to shave these spots, but you have to be very careful in avoiding nicks and cuts, and stubble can be an itchy problem during the regrowth period.

We can also treat these areas with lasers, getting you the smooth skin you want without all the pain that comes with razor and wax treatments.

Chest, Back, and Stomach

Anyone may suffer from more hair on the chest and stomach than they like, but this is a particularly popular treatment for men. If you are a man with hair anywhere on your torso that you feel is too thick, laser treatments could thin it out or give you smooth skin entirely. This is also useful for women who have unwanted hair on their chests.

How Does It Work?

Laser hair removal can permanently reduce the hair on your body using near-infrared laser light. This light is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. The color in the hair attracts the laser light, which travels down the hair shaft until it reaches the follicle. The heat from the laser damages the follicle so it cannot grow hair the way it used to.

Follicles that are only damaged will eventually grow hair again. This will take several months, and the hair that does grow back will be thinner and slower to grow. In some cases, the heat from the laser will actually destroy the follicle and it will never grow any hair at all. The longer you continue your cycle of maintenance treatments, the more permanent your results will be.

In the past, both laser and IPL hair treatments were only suitable for people with very light skin and very dark hair. That’s because the light from the laser was easily attracted to darker skin and could not find lighter color pigments of hair. The Nd: YAG laser we use is a state-of-the-art solution that can be used on a wider variety of hair colors and skin tones. This laser is capable of targeting hair without damaging the skin cells surrounding it.

FAQ

Am I a Good Candidate?

This laser is a wonderful option for nearly anyone, no matter your skin color, gender, or hair color. If you’ve been told in the past that you were not a good candidate for this type of hair treatment, talk to us about whether our innovative laser could help.

Most people who do not have a skin infection in the target area or skin that is particularly sensitive to light are good candidates for treatment.

Does The Laser Hurt?

The first generation of light treatments for hair removal was fairly uncomfortable. Most people described them as like having a rubber band flipped hard against your skin, or worse. The newest lasers we use are far more comfortable. Talk to us about creams, ice, and other ways we can make you perfectly comfortable during your treatment.

How Many Treatments Does It Take?

The number of treatments you require always depends on your unique skin and hair color as well as your ultimate goal. If you want to reduce hair rather than get rid of it altogether, you will only need one or two treatments. If you want completely smooth skin, plan on anywhere from four to eight treatments, depending on your unique situation.

How Long Should I Wait Between Treatments?

You will need to wait between two and six weeks between your treatments. This is because your hair can be treated most effectively when it is in the active growing stage. Whenever you have a treatment, only some of your hairs will be in that stage. By waiting a few weeks, you allow more of the hair to cycle into the active growing stage so the laser can target them.

How Long Will It Last?

For most people, the effects will last at least six months and up to a year. After that, a yearly or twice-yearly, one-time maintenance treatment will keep up your results.

The more often you get maintenance treatments, the more likely you will completely destroy follicles and see permanent results, but even if some of the hair does grow back, it will be thin and grow far more slowly than you remember.

Is It Really Worth Doing?

If you’ve been putting off these treatments because it seems like they’re just one way among many to get results—no better or worse than another method—then you might want to consider the laser in close comparison with your other options.

Shaving

Shaving is the classic and oldest form of removing hair, but it’s also the most time-consuming and temporary method. Shaving never addresses the root cause of the problem and only gets rid of the hair that can actually be seen above the skin.

Shaving always carries a risk of nicks and cuts, which could become infected. More bothersome to most of us is than razor burn is the irritation that comes with constant shaving. And the more thickly your hair grows, the more you have to shave it to keep it down, and the more likely you are to have razor burn marks giving away the fact that you shave.

Finally, shaving seems inexpensive, but that’s not actually true. Over a lifetime, the average woman will spend more than $10,000 on shaving products. And if you count your time as worth even as little as $7 an hour, those 80 days of shaving add up to another $13,500 worth of lost time over the course of your life.

Waxing and Plucking

Waxing and plucking both get rid of the entire hair, which means the effects last a lot longer than with shaving. That’s good, but what’s not so good is the pain involved. Pulling out your hair by the roots is just painful, whether you do it one, agonizing hair at a time via plucking or all at once in a waxing treatment.

And, of course, plucking is a very inefficient method of removing more than a few stray hairs. Waxing, meanwhile, requires you to wait for the hair to grow out long enough for the wax to grab, meaning you have to cover up for a while waiting for it to get there.

With laser hair treatments, you can get the same smooth skin without the pain and inconvenience.
